Payilagam பயிலகம்

I love languages and disentangling the roots of words. Languages can reflect back to us our history, our values, our politics - our struggles for freedom and equality. Tamil is both indigenous and ancient. It is the oldest living written language and literature still spoken widely today. Embedded with both beautiful and dark history, we can still hear the echoes of those values that have withstood the test of time.

Through dissecting language, various alternatives to history open. Stories of tolerance, of struggle, of industriousness and of self-respect. Language can show us many truths about the modern world, as well as how to use these truths to deliberately shape society anew. It holds the power to cause great harm and violence. It can also empower us to access our rights, embolden us to seek justice, love, and look out for each other.

I enjoy the unveiling of the Tamil attempt at addressing some of these topics. Religious and casteist sentiment, chauvinistic tendency, expressions of politeness, the antagonization of certain occupations, and the regard of genders are all elucidated within language. Tamil and Tamilians make a bold attempt at wrestling with those values that quash human endeavour, freedom of expression and the right to life and dignity.

Through Payilagam Podcast, I hope to help learners connect with all that is Tamil - its diaspora, the roots of its culture, and unfold the values that still burn within the hearts of the people who keep it alive. In the process of this, you will find that much that you may have thought was Tamil is not, and that much of what Tamil is has never been properly acknowledged by the outside world. I hope to help the learner to fuse themselves with the language, and to find the best Tamil versions of themselves in the process.

One learns not only Tamil in Payilagam, but gains a glimpse into the Tamilian and their journey through time...
